The goal of this project was to create a visual identity that continues to welcome the Copenhagen Zoo’s main demographic, young children and their parents, while also encouraging more teens, young adults, and adults without children to visit the Zoo. In addition, the Zoo would like to continue to show its commitment to conservation and the ethical treatment of animals.
To appeal to a wider age range, I created posters that children would find amusing and adults would find visually pleasing. I isolated the “Z” from “Zoo” and made it the main feature of the Zoo’s new visual identity. With five different animal combinations, children will enjoy spotting similarities and differences between the creatures and adults will enjoy collecting the modern, artistic posters. The simplicity of the design reflects the Zoo’s commitment to transparency, and the wide variety of animals displayed show the Zoo’s dedication to preserving Earth’s biodiversity.
The bold background colors provide a recognizable, playful feel, while the black and white animals are simple and coherent.
Elephant is used for titles because of its organic, animal-like quality. Italian Plate No1 is more understated, and works well for informational material that I want the viewer to look at second, after the title.
To provide the Zoo with design material that could be used on digital platforms, I created an animation using the "Z" animals used in the posters. It uses the same colors and type as the posters to provide a coherent design identity. It's simple, fast, and playful. Watch it here.
